Estoy jubilada de mi trabajo pagado y ahora tengo un trabajo voluntario a tiempo completo en una maravillosa organización no lucrativa llamada Días Para Mujercitas. Leí un artículo en una revista en 2015 sobre la organización y cambió totalmente mi vida. Leí que algunas niñas y mujeres en todo el mundo no podían ir a la escuela ni trabajar solo porque no tenían soluciones para manejar su menstruación mensual. Las niñas que no tienen productos menstruales pierden aproximadamente 5 días de clases al mes. Pronto no pueden mantenerse al día y abandonan la escuela por completo, tal como lo hicieron sus madres y tal cómo lo harán sus hijas en el futuro si no se detiene la tendencia. Las consecuencias no son solo días perdidos de escuela o días de trabajo perdidos, también es pérdida de la autoestima y de la dignidad. Punto. La Pobreza es algo real para algunas mujeres en todas las comunidades, en todas las ciudades, en todos los países. Incluso aquí en Canadá, si una mujer va al banco de alimentos en busca de alimentos, es probable que no pueda pagar los productos menstruales desechables que nuestra sociedad ha normalizado.
La misión de Días para Mujercitas es brindar soluciones menstruales a todas las niñas, en todas partes, y punto. En parte, eso significa hacer kits menstruales lavables que duran al menos 3 años. Con estos kits, es mucho más fácil manejar sus periodos y recuperar los días perdidos. Junto con la distribución de kits menstruales, Días para Mujercitas ha desarrollado un curso llamado Embajador de la Salud de la Mujer. Este es un curso en línea gratuito que enseña cómo hablar sobre el periodo y sobre nuestro sistema reproductivo. La mayoría de nosotros no nos sentimos cómodos hablando de períodos. ¿Por qué es eso?, sin períodos no habría gente. Es un fenómeno que compartimos. La educación ayuda a acabar con los tabúes que rodean a la menstruación.
Días para Mujercitas cuenta con más de mil equipos y más de setenta mil voluntarios en todo el mundo. Nuestro movimiento ha llegado a más de 2,1 millones de niñas durante los últimos 13 años. Invertir en las niñas y las mujeres es invertir en un futuro mejor que sea igual para todos, para las niñas mismas, para sus familias y para las comunidades. Una niña que puede permanecer en la escuela tiene menos probabilidades de casarse temprano, será menos probable que sea explotada y además tendrá más posibilidades de transmitir este legado a la próxima generación.
Pequeños negocios de Días para Mujercitas se han iniciado en varios países en desarrollo. Las mujeres locales se ganan la vida con estos negocios. Han seguido el curso de Embajadora de la Salud de la Mujer. Están fabricando y vendiendo productos menstruales y educando a las personas de su comunidad. Están promocionando y difundiendo información sobre la equidad del período. Se están convirtiendo en líderes en su comunidad.
Hay tantas cosas que son difíciles de cambiar en este mundo. Esta no es una de ellos. Hemos distribuido estos kits. He visto a las niñas y mujeres abrazar su kit, con aplausos, con sonrisas y risas porque recuperarán sus días y tendrán libertad para hacerse cargo de sus vidas. Podrán permanecer en la escuela, recibir educación y obtener un empleo. Muchas veces, la diferencia entre obtener una educación y tener un futuro mejor, libre de explotación, es el acceso a soluciones menstruales. Algo tan simple y a la vez difícil para muchos. ¡Podemos hacerlo!

Days for Girls
I am retired from my paid job and now I have a full time, volunteer job working with a wonderful non profit organization called Days for Girls. I read an article in a magazine in 2015 about the Days for Girls organization and it totally changed my life. I read that girls and women all over the world were not able to go to school or go to work just because they did not have solutions to manage their monthly menstruation. Girls who do not have menstrual products will miss about 5 days of school a month. Soon they can’t keep up and they will drop out of school altogether just as their mothers did and just as their girl children will do in the future if the trend is not stopped. The consequences aren’t just lost days of school or lost days of work, it is also loss of self-esteem and dignity. Period Poverty is a real thing for some women in every community, in every city, in every country. Even here in Canada, if a woman is going to the food bank for food, she likely cannot afford the disposable menstrual products that our society has made normal.
The mission of Days for Girls is to provide menstrual solutions to every girl, everywhere, period. In part, that means making, washable, menstrual kits that will last at least 3 years. That is many periods made easier, many days given back. Along with the distribution of menstrual kits, Days for Girls has developed a course called the Ambassador of Women’s Health. This is a free online course that teaches how to talk about periods and our reproductive system. Most of us are not comfortable talking about periods. Why is that? Without periods there would be no people. It is an amazing phenomena that all of us humans share. Education will help to stop the taboos surrounding menstruation.
Days for girls has over 1,000 teams and over 70,000 volunteers around the world. Our movement has reached more than 2.1 million girls over the past 13 years. Investing in girls and women is investing in a better future that is equal for all – for girls themselves, for their families and for communities. A girl who is able to stay in school is less likely to marry early, she will be less likely to die in childbirth, she will be less likely to be exploited and she will have a better chance at passing this legacy onto the next generation.
Small Days for girls businesses have been started in developing countries. Local women are making a living running these businesses. They have learned the Ambassador of Women’s Health course. They are making and selling menstrual products and educating people in their community. They are marketing and spreading the word about Period Equity. They are becoming leaders in their community
There are so many things that are hard to change in this world. This is not one of them. We have distributed these kits. I have seen the girls and women hug their kit, cheering with smiles and laughter because they will get their days back, they will have freedom to take charge of their lives. They will be able to stay in school, become educated and gain employment. Many times the difference between getting an education and having a better future, free of exploitation, is access to menstrual solutions. Something so simple and yet difficult for many. We can do this! We must reach Every Girl. Everywhere. Period!
