Como ya sabrás, estamos buscando más voluntarios para escribir en el blog porque cuantos más, mejor. Sé que puedes estar pensando que no puedo escribir esto bien en español o incluso en inglés, especialmente si el inglés no es tu lengua materna. Bueno, ninguno de nosotros es totalmente bilingüe en inglés y español. Todos estamos aprendiendo y escribir blogs es una forma estupenda de mejorar tu español o tu inglés, sea cual sea el que estés aprendiendo.
EHBA nos permite, a los escritores del blog, escribir sobre cualquier cosa que deseemos sin ningún tema predeterminado, siempre y cuando nos mantengamos alejados de temas que puedan ser controvertidos, como la promoción de nuestras propias opiniones políticas o religiosas, o cualquier cosa ofensiva. Podemos escribir sobre cualquier cosa: un viaje que hayamos hecho, cómo estamos aprendiendo español, la sopa que hicimos ayer, una tradición de nuestra familia, nuestros programas de televisión favoritos, nuestros memes preferidos, etc. El objetivo final es practicar la escritura y ofrecer a nuestros queridos lectores una variedad de posts bilingües para leer. Personalmente, disfruto de la libertad de escribir sobre lo que me apetece y, por supuesto, siempre espero que alguien disfrute leyéndolo. Puede que pienses que tu vida es aburrida, pero en realidad, estoy convencida de que es interesante para muchos. Ninguno de nosotros vive una vida de celebridad muy glamurosa, así que estás entre amigos. Todo el mundo quiere saber por qué haces ganchillo/tejido, cómo estás entrenando a tu nuevo cachorro, por qué tus hijos son los mejores, cuáles son tus vacaciones/trabajo soñados, por qué estás aprendiendo español, etc.
Como he dicho antes, es una buena manera de practicar el español o el inglés. En mi caso, escribo mi post en inglés, mi segundo idioma, y luego lo traduzco al español, mi tercer idioma, lo mejor que puedo. Una vez que está listo, nuestra querida coordinadora académica, Ángela Camacho, corrige nuestros posts tanto en español como en inglés y aquí es donde empieza el aprendizaje como escritor. Con las correcciones de Ángela sobre las conjugaciones de los verbos, las palabras y la forma de redactar una frase, se aprende y es lo más útil.
Nuestros puestos pueden ser tan largos o tan cortos como queramos. Tenemos plena libertad y esto es poco frecuente en las oportunidades de voluntariado. Hay que tener en cuenta que la mayoría de los empleadores ven la experiencia de voluntariado como una experiencia laboral, además de demostrarles que puedes comprometerte y que puedes completar las tareas a tiempo (source: Alis Alberta). Mi empleador permite algunas horas de voluntariado pagadas al año, lo que demuestra el compromiso de mi empresa con el valor de dejar que sus empleados ayuden en su comunidad. Además, ayuda a conocer a otras personas, sí, de forma remota, pero puedo decir que si otro bloguero de EHBA necesita algo, estaré allí para ayudar.
Empecé a bloguear con EHBA alrededor de noviembre de 2020 ya que tenía mucho tiempo libre en mi vida sin viajar durante la pandemia. Me imaginé que lo haría durante unos meses y lo dejaría, pero aquí estoy en mayo de 2021 todavía haciéndolo, a pesar de que ahora estoy trabajando por más de 40 horas a la semana. ¿Por qué? Porque necesito aprender nuevas palabras y formas de decir las cosas. Escribir para el blog me permite ampliar mi vocabulario sobre temas que me importan, que son temas de los que hablaría en una conversación con un hispanohablante o con un compañero de trabajo.
Es importante señalar que no es necesario ser un estudiante activo de EHBA ni vivir en Edmonton para ser considerado como voluntario. Las personas que no son estudiantes y los individuos de todo el mundo también son bienvenidos.

Why should you become an EHBA volunteer blogger?
As you might know, we are looking for more blog writing volunteers because the more, the merrier. I know you might be thinking: I cannot write this well in Spanish or even in English, especially if English is not your native language. Well, none of us are fully bilingual in English and Spanish either. We are all learning and writing blogs is a great way to improve either your Spanish or English, whichever one you are learning.
EHBA allows us, blog writers, to write about anything we wish without any predetermined themes as long as we stay away from subjects that could be controversial like pushing our own political or religious views or anything offensive. We can write about anything: a trip we took, how we are learning Spanish, the soup we made yesterday, a tradition in our family, our favourite TV shows, our favourite memes, etc. The ultimate goal is to practice writing and to offer our dear readers a variety of bilingual posts to read from. Personally, I enjoy the freedom to write about whatever I want to talk about and, of course, I always hope someone will enjoy reading it. You might think your life is boring, but in reality, I’m convinced that it is interesting to many. None of us live very glamorous celebrity lives, so you are amongst friends. Everyone wants to hear about why you crochet/knit, how you are training your new puppy, why your children are the best, what’s your dream vacation/job, why you are learning Spanish, etc.
As I said earlier, it is a good way to practice your Spanish or English. In my case, I write my post in English, my 2nd language, then translate it into Spanish, my 3rd language, to the best of my abilities. Once it is ready, our dearest academic coordinator, Angela Camacho, proof-reads our posts both in Spanish and English and this is where the learning starts as the writer. Angela’s corrections of verb conjugations, word use, and how a sentence is worded teach us and it is the most helpful ever.
Our posts can be as long or as short as we wish. We have full freedom and this is rare for volunteer opportunities. It is worth noting that most employers see volunteer experience as work experience, on top of showing them that you can make a commitment and that you can complete tasks on time (source: Alis Alberta). My employer allows some paid volunteer hours each year, which shows my employer’s commitment to the value of letting their employees help in their community. Additionally, it helps meet other people, yes in a remote fashion, but I can tell you if another EHBA blogger needs anything, I’ll be there to help.
I started blogging with EHBA back in November 2020 as I had a lot of free time in my life with no travel during the pandemic. I figured I would do it for a few months and give up, but here I’m in May 2021 still going at it even though I’m working more than 40 hours a week now. Why? Because I need to learn new words and ways of saying things. Writing for the blog allows me to expand my vocabulary on subjects that matter to me, which are subjects I would talk about in a conversation with a Spanish speaker or coworker.
It is important to note that you don’t have to be an active EHBA student nor living in Edmonton to be considered for volunteering. Non-students and individuals from around the world are also welcome.
